The New Zealand Institute of Private Investigators (NZIPI) is the national professional body for licensed private investigators across Aotearoa New Zealand.
We uphold integrity, professionalism, and accountability within the investigative sector, supporting our members through education, guidance, and representation.
NZIPI collaborates with the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (PSPLA), government agencies, legal professionals, and industry partners to uphold standards that protect both the public and the reputation of our profession.
Our purpose is simple — to advance professional practice, enhance capability, and ensure that private investigation in New Zealand remains lawful, ethical, and credible.
Founded in 1988, NZIPI was established to raise standards and bring professional structure to New Zealand’s private investigation industry.
From humble beginnings, NZIPI has evolved into a respected national body recognised by the Ministry of Justice’s Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (PSPLA) as the official professional association for the industry.
Over the past three decades, NZIPI has grown into a nationwide community representing investigators in every region —from the main centres to rural areas — providing advocacy, professional development, and peer collaboration.
Our history reflects a simple vision: a respected, unified, and ethical profession that New Zealanders can trust.
